A heartwarming christmas scene with two kids reading with their dad
The magic of Christmas storytime

Hi there, fellow festive frantic person! If your living room currently looks like a glitter bomb went off in a ribbon factory, welcome. You’re among friends.

The holidays are great, but let’s be real: sometimes we just need the kids to sit still for ten minutes so we can drink our cocoa before it turns into chocolate sludge. Enter: The Christmas Book. It’s like a magical spell that turns "high-energy reindeer" children into "listening elves."

Here are my top seven Christmas book picks for the under-10 crowd—guaranteed to bring the whimsy and keep the peace.

1. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg

This book is basically a vibe. It’s moody, it’s beautiful, and it features a train that serves hot chocolate. If only my morning commute involved a steam engine and pajamas. It’s a classic for a reason—it makes even the most skeptical ten-year-old pause and listen for that tiny silver bell.

Listen, we’ve all had those "I’m over it" moments during the holidays, but Blitzen takes the cake. This is a story about tenacity, which is a fancy word for "not quitting even when your antlers are crooked." When Blitzen hits a snag, he doesn’t just pout in the stables; he gets back up. It’s the perfect "hang in there" pep talk for kids (and honestly, for parents trying to assemble a 400-piece dollhouse). A Christmas book that is sure to be a new classic.

3. The Jolly Christmas Postman by Janet & Allan Ahlberg

This book is a sensory delight. You get to be a nosy neighbor and read other people’s mail! It’s full of actual envelopes and tiny pull-out letters. Just a warning: your toddler will try to "mail" their half-eaten cracker in one of these envelopes. Proceed with caution.

4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss

Can we talk about the Grinch’s relatability? Wanting to stay in a cave with a dog and avoid the noise? Goal. But watching his heart grow three sizes is the ultimate holiday "aww" moment. Plus, the rhyming is so snappy you’ll feel like a lyrical genius while reading it aloud.

5. Dasher by Matt Tavares

This is for the kid who thinks they’re an explorer. It’s an origin story about a reindeer with a dream. The illustrations are so pretty you’ll want to rip them out and frame them (don't do that, the librarians get cranky). It’s sweet, adventurous, and very "girl power."

6. The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore

The GOAT of holiday poems. It is the best Christmas book ever. If you don't read this on Christmas Eve while wearing matching flannels, did Christmas even happen? It’s short, it’s rhythmic, and it’s the perfect "okay, seriously, go to sleep now" closer.

7. Stick Man by Julia Donaldson

Stick Man is a hero for the ages. He’s just a stick, lost in a world of dogs who want to fetch him and fires that want to... well, fire him. It’s hilarious, a bit stressful (poor Stick Man!), and features a very "stuck" Santa who needs a helping hand—or twig.

Which of these festive tales are you going to use to distract your tiny humans while you sneak the "good" chocolate from the pantry?
